Are Psychics Bad?

Are Psychics Bad?

When looking for something to write about, I found someone’s question, which was: what does the bible say about psychics? The bible does make mention of psychics many times. But they are not always called psychics in the bible. Some common synonyms for the word psychic, according to Thesaurus.com, are:

augur, clairvoyant, crystal ball gazer, diviner, medium, mind reader, oracle, palm reader, palmist, predicter, prophet, psychic, seer, soothsayer, spiritualist, tarot reader, tea-leaf reader

What Is A Psychic?
Today’s psychics come from a brand of religion that is considered new ageism. New Age theology has nothing to do with Christianity and this type of psychic would be called a medium, diviner, witch or soothsayer in biblical terminology. Were you to look up these words in a bible concordance you would find very negative connotations for these type practitioners according to God written in the bible.

Scripture About Mediums (Psychics)
Here are some scripture verses on mediums that I think would be helpful to the person who asked this question:

"’Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God,’" (Leviticus 19:31 NIV).

"’I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute himself by following them, and I will cut him off from his people," (Leviticus 20:6 NIV).

"’When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?’"(Isaiah 8:19 NIV).

Scripture About Witchcraft or Sorcery
Witchcraft is another form of divination. Here are some scripture verses that deal with witchcraft:

"’Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft,’" (Deuteronomy 18:10 NIV).

"I will destroy your witchcraft and you will no longer cast spells," (Micah 5:12 NIV).

"The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God," (Galatians 5:19-21 NIV).

My Discrepancy
Although among Thesaurus.com’s synonyms for psychic there is the word "prophet" I would disagree with their interpretation. A prophet in the bible is different from a medium. Prophets in the bible were like Elijah and Elisha and even John the Baptist, in New Testament times. They had supernatural powers granted to them by God through the Holy Spirit, which they were indwelt with. These prophets did the will of God. They didn’t consult the dead and when they gave special information that others couldn’t perceive, it came from God not from evil spirits. Psychics gather their information from evil spirits and the dead. As you can see from the above verses, this was and is detestable in God’s sight. In fact, in the time Levitical laws were being given, it was commanded by God that mediums, sorcerers and diviners be put to death by stoning if they were found among God’s people. This is because God’s people are not supposed to engage in black magic or sorcery, divination, or otherwise.

How To Tell Who Is Who
Psychics in today’s society sometimes claim to receive their powers from God. Here is the way in which you can tell whether or not they are truly from God as said in 1 John 4:1-3 (NIV):

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

In Conclusion
I hope this posting has helped you to discern truth from fiction when it comes to prophets and false prophets. If you really are concerned about whether someone is a false prophet or not, seek God on it. The Holy Spirit will give you the insight you need to tell if you are a true believer with the Holy Spirit. Hopefully, you already have a close connection with God and have no imagined need to seek a psychic.
